Still a classc

Product arrived promptly. Film is a classic--a few misfires and a few (in 2020) anachronisms but still entertaining, with great performances by zero Mostel, Gene Wilder, Kenneth Mars and others--plus fantastic musical numbers ("Springtime for HItler," "Prisoners of Love).Read full review...

Best "Producers"

The original and best version of the film. All the stars are A+, and my particular favorite is Gene Wilder. This man is the classic film comedian.

I’m wet! I’m hysterical and I’m wet!

Replaced my defective copy of the immortal Mel Brooks’ first comedy smash! Perfect!

Almost as good.

I enjoyed this version, but think the remake was better. My rule is, watch everything Mel Brooks filmed.

The Producers (1968) DVD

I recently purchased from eBay a copy of the original 1968 movie 'The Producers' starring Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder. I bought this movie as a companion piece for its musical remake starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. It was fascinating to study just how many of the song lyrics had their basis in what was simply screenplay dialogue in the original. I also found it very interesting to see what director Mel Brooks had decided didn't work in the original (such as the hippie Hitler) and how things were revised when he rewrote his own material as a Broadway musical (e.g., the gay director has to play Hitler at the last second).

The DVD bought in the auction arrived in perfect condition, and played flawlessly... including its additional features. I loved finally seeing this first film of Mel Brooks, which is referenced in small ways throughout the rest of his career (including 'To Be Or Not To Be'). I didn't enjoy the dated late 1960's writing, especially the drug references, but I found it very telling that even Brooks himself realized they were unnecessary to the overall story and omitted them for the far more timeless musical version.
