Worth the investment!

I needed a good 'hobby' soldering iron for my electronics project and after reading glowing reviews from a lot of electronics sites I decided on the Weller.

The variable temp and changable tips along with the convenient solder station make this a great beginner or hobby soldering iron. I've used a lot of cheapo solder irons from that "electronics store" but they never seem to heat consistently or last very long. The 40-watt is very fast to heat up and solder multiple joints in a row. This is a great iron for doing automotive and guitar soldering projects. The provided chisel tip is great for heating up larger spots for soldering - like electronic shielding or automotive wire splice joints, both of which require consistant heat.

Only one slight issue. The solder iron cradle holds the iron well but you realy have to make sure it's fully seated propery or it will slide out due to the weight from the cord. The cradle is set to about 45 deg from the factory. I solved this issue by bending the cradle up in more of verticle position to about 25-30 deg. Now I can confidently place the hot iron in the cradle without having to worry about it slipping.

Very happy there is a built-in 'ON / OFF' switch with an indicator light. When I turn it off I want to make sure it's off from a quick glance.

WLC100 is Adequate for Basic Soldering

I've used the Weller WTCPS 60 watt station for more than 20 years. It always served me well and solder joints were consistent. I can't say the same about the WLC100 soldering station. It takes a bit longer to heat up, and doesn't seem to regulate the temperature at all. You must manually adjust the pot on the base (start at 3) for the application at hand. Not recommended for delicate work, only basic soldering.Read full review

Good Value, Gets The Job Done

The Weller 40-Watt Soldering Station, Lightweight Pencil Iron, WLC100 is a great soldering station. I am a hobbyist and I don't do a lot of soldering, so having a good hot iron is a big help in keeping my joints clean and tidy. The spring holder is very convenient, as is the sponge right at your finger tips to clean your tip.

My one issue with this soldering station is the iron plugs in on the left side, which puts the cord in the way of whatever you're trying to work on. You have to curl it back around behind the unit, which is not a big deal but still seems that would have been better placed in the back of the unit. Otherwise very pleased with the performance and the price. Would recommend.

slight modification required

Unit heats and performs soldering function well. I did have to grind out the holder for the (hot) iron because the neck of the iron would catch on the small hole meant to accept its circumference. After a little grinding / sanding, it works fine.Read full review

Good soldering station...

Well worth the price. My old soldering iron was great but sometimes got to hot for certain things. Now I can plug my old iron (which is smaller wattage) into the station and have regulated heat with the smaller iron. Is this a great country or what?Read full review

40 Watt may be too much wattage for delicate work.

I have used many soldering Irons and this one is working as expected. Tip is excellent. Warm up time is very slow set to medium heat however turning up the heat it warms quickly however there is no protection against it overheating and burning off the tin the thin coating of solder that is necessary for a tip to actually solder. Good not Great Iron. Plenty of power probabably better to get the 30W iron for fine circuit board work.Read full review

Very useful

Only had it for a couple weeks, but like it so far. Good heat control and wand use. I recommend.

Not what I expected

Its takes a long time to heat up and is too light. I have to turn it to max power to heat up and then reduce power to solder. Most soldering that I did with the iron had to be close to the max, but should have been less the one half power if the heat range is correctRead full review

The Standard General Purpose Solder Station

Weller is known to be expensive but this particular station is inexpensive and ideal for general soldering work.

Low end Weller totally worth it!

I make a large part of my living soldering old tube amps and guitar electronics back together. I also build amps. When it comes to doing this kind of work do not go with a poor quality soldering iron. My main one is a Weller WES51, quite expensive but well worth it. I bought this one for a school that I work for so I could leave it on location. It's a pleasure to work with and for the low cost, it gets the job done perfectly! If you are thinking about getting a great iron and don't have the dough for a flagship, this is your tugboat! Thumbs up all the way!
