Energy efficiency labelling

Learn about the information you need to display in your listings for electrical products, including smartphones and tablets, and tires available for sale in the EU and UK.

Here’s what you need to know

As a business seller, you’re required to display energy efficiency or performance information in your listings if you sell specific types of electrical products and tires in the EU and UK. This ensures your compliance with EU regulations and provides your buyers with clear information about how energy efficient a product is.

Applicable products and categories

Energy efficiency labelling requirements apply to the following products and categories:

Electrical products:

  • Electronic displays
  • Household appliances and freezers, including refrigerators
  • Household washing machines, washer-dryers, tumble dryers, and vacuum cleaners
  • Household dishwashers
  • Light sources
  • Household ovens
  • Room air conditioners (air conditioners)
  • Extractor hoods
  • Space heaters
  • Hot water tank/heater

Energy efficiency labelling requirements

To comply with regulations and help your buyers make energy-efficient purchases, you must display the information below in your listings:

  • Energy efficiency class (EC range)
  • Energy efficiency rating
  • Energy efficiency label
  • Product information sheet

Energy and tire labels contain useful information about a product’s energy consumption and performance, which can help guide your buyer’s purchasing decision.

Here are a few examples of energy efficiency labels for different types of products

Smartphones and tablets

  1. Scale of energy efficiency classes from A to G.
  2. The energy efficiency class of this product.
  3. The battery endurance per cycle, in hours and minutes per full battery charge.
  4. Repeated free fall reliability class.
  5. Battery endurance in cycles.
  6. Repairability class.
  7. Ingress Protection (enclosure against dust and liquids) rating.

*Energy efficiency labelling requirements for smartphones and tablets applies to sellers in the EU and Northern Ireland (NI) only.

  1. New smartphones and tablets:

-New models released on or after June 20, 2025, or

-Units of previous models being placed on the EU or NI market for the first time after June 20, 2025.

  2. Used smartphones and tablets, if:
-Imported from outside the EU or NI after June 20, 2025, regardless of the original model’s release date.

Refrigerators and freezers

  1. Scale of energy efficiency classes from A to G.
  2. The energy efficiency class of this product.
  3. Annual energy consumption in kWh.
  4. The sum of the volumes of the frozen compartment(s) in litres.
  5. The sum of the volumes of the chill compartment(s) and unfrozen compartment(s) in liters.
  6. Airborne acoustical noise emissions and class. In this case this is a B class.

Light sources

  1. Scale of energy efficiency classes from A to G.
  2. The energy efficiency class of this product.
  3. Energy Consumption of the light source in on-mode, expressed in kWh of electricity consumption per 1 000 hours.
  4. QR Code.
  5. The number of this Regulation that is ‘2019/2015’.

Tires

  1. Rolling Resistance Class (A to E).
  2. Wet Grip Class (A to E).
  3. External Rolling Noise Level.
  4. External Rolling Noise Class (A to C).
  5. Tire for severe snow conditions.
  6. Tire for severe ice conditions.

Easily add energy efficiency documentation to your listings

There are two ways you can go about adding the necessary information to your listings.

1

eBay functionality

To help you comply, we’ve added functionality that makes it easy for you to directly upload accurate energy efficiency documentation to your listings and gives you more control over the information displayed to your buyers.

When you’re creating or revising a listing:

• Upload the energy efficiency label and product information sheet directly as image files to your listings in the item disclosures section.

• For electrical items, include the energy efficiency rating and EC range in the item specifics.

2

Third-party providers

We’ve also partnered with third-party providers who can help supply energy and tyre labels, along with the product information sheet for certain products.

When you’re creating or revising a listing, add the details below in the item specifics. The relevant information will then be displayed in your listings if it’s available in the third-party provider’s database:

• Tires: European Article Number (EAN)

• Electrical items: Brand, Manufacturer Part Number (MPN), European Article Number (EAN), energy efficiency rating, and EC range

Please note that it’s your responsibility to verify that the information is visible in your listings and accurate. If the information is missing or inaccurate, you can upload the required documentation using our functionality. For step-by-step instructions on how to add energy efficiency documentation to your listings, visit our Help page.

FAQs

You can find the energy efficiency labels, product information sheets, and EU tire label for your products in several ways:

  • Visit the manufacturer's website
  • Search for the product on the EPREL - European Product Registry for Energy Labeling page
  • Ask your supplier
  • Scan the QR code of the energy efficiency label (if applicable) that's printed on the product, packaging, or documentation. It will direct you to the EPREL site, where you can find the product information sheet.

The images can be in JPEG (.jpg), BMP (.bmp), GIF (.gif), TIF (.tiff), or PNG (.png) format and should be more than 500 pixels on the longest side. If the energy label and product information sheet are in PDF format, you'll need to convert them using a PDF converter tool.

This happens if the third-party provider doesn’t have the necessary information in their database. In this case, you need to add this information to your listings using eBay’s functionality to stay compliant.

Energy efficiency labelling is applicable to tires with classifications C1, C2, and C3. To find out if the tires you’re selling require energy efficiency labelling, visit the EU’s energy efficient products page for tires.

Currently, each listing can display only one energy arrow, one energy label, and one product data sheet, even if the listing includes variants, sets, or bundles of products. Selecting a specific variant won’t update the displayed energy information. To show different energy efficiency details for different products, you’ll need to create separate listings.

You’re legally required to comply by adding energy efficiency documentation to your listings. Having non compliant listings may result in fines and your listings not being visible to buyers.

Rescaling is the process of revising energy efficiency labels for certain product categories to reflect a simplified rating system. New rating scales are designed to make labels easier to understand, ensure consistency across product types, and accommodate future technological advancements. For example, tumble dryers have recently been rescaled, moving from the previous A+++ to D scale to a new A–G format.

It's important to stay informed about the current energy labelling scale for any products you sell, as all energy labelling documentation must reflect the most up-to-date classification. You can check the current energy labelling classification for your product type on the European Commission’s website.
